Why “I just need to…” is a Red Flag Phrase

Savings:

I just need to spend less than I earn.

Weight loss:

I just need to take in fewer calories and burn more during exercise.

Productivity:

I just need to focus and stop procrastinating.

Then why don’t we “Just do it”, as Nike recommends?

The classic explanation is that we “just” lack discipline.

Here’s the classic advice to overcome any resistance:

“You just have to make yourself do it, even when you don’t want to.” 🙄

This advice wins double gold medals for:

  1. Least helpful advice ever
  2. Most frequently given advice

Here’s the truth:

You don’t lack willpower.

You don’t lack discipline.

You aren’t lazy.

What’s really going on:

You took a wrong turn 1,000 steps back. That’s it. At some point, you lost sight of your north star and started walking in the direction of a shiny imposter.

Every step that must be forced to push forward is simply moving you farther away from where you’re actually supposed to be.

If you’re feeling lazy, stuck, avoidant, and so on, it’s not because you need more discipline. It’s because part of you knows that you aren’t in the right place and that you’re trying to force something that was never meant for you.

If you believe that you “just need to” do what appears to be the obvious next step in your situation, but you just can’t seem to do it, take it as a signal from now on. Let it be a red flag that tells us to stop and re-evaluate.

I encourage you to ask yourself:

How did I get into this situation?

Why am I trying to accomplish this at all?

What might explain my resistance to moving forward?

We often start by trying to figure this all out on our own, but that can prove difficult and unfruitful.

This is something that I’m very passionate about. I know that we need to take a few steps back and reconnect with who you are and what you really want. Then, and only then, may we move into the actionable steps of getting things done and making progress in the right direction.

If any of this resonated with you, I would love to hear about it.
